If you can believe it, we are already into July and more than halfway through the year.

For those with children still at school that generally means one thing – the school holidays are looming! Breaking up from school means six weeks of entertaining the kids with as many activities as possible to tire them out or stop them from being bored. Plus, it’s about keeping them off the games consoles and getting them out and about in the fresh air.

We’ve taken a sporty look at some of the options that are available over July and August that will keep the kids entertained and possibly parents too!

Adventure Golf At Four Ashes Golf Centre

So we’re obviously going to start with our very own adventure golf course here in Solihull.

When the sun is shining, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re by the seaside playing some crazy golf, we’ve even got the ice creams for when you’ve finished too. Our 18 hole course features some challenging obstacles and plenty of water features where you could lose your ball! Don’t worry though, we have a lot of nets on hand to fish your ball out.

During busy times, we recommend booking online to avoid queuing too much and it’s really accessible for all ages and all abilities. We’ve also got a café to relax in afterwards with a snack or a meal and we also serve Costa Coffee so it’s a great way to spend a few hours.

With the Cricket World Cup taking place this summer in England and Wales, there is an appetite for cricket at the moment.

England’s thrilling victory over India at Edgbaston caught the imagination in the region and you can follow this on, with seven domestic T20 matches for Birmingham Bears, at Edgbaston. The Bears face the likes of Nottinghamshire, Lancashire and local rivals Worcestershire throughout July and August and the best part is that under 16s go free.

Whether it’s an introduction to cricket for the kids or just the excitement of the short version of the game, the matches are a great day or evening out for all the family. The fixtures and ticket information can all be found on the Birmingham Bears website.

Football Stadium tours

Have you ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at your favourite football club?

Depending on which side of the city you are, you can take a stadium tour at St. Andrew’s or Villa Park and see where your footballing heroes prepare for a matchday. You can get to see everything from changing rooms to board rooms and walk down the tunnel that leads to the pitch and see where the TV interviews take place.

A must for any fan of Birmingham City or Aston Villa who is missing their fix of football during the close season.

Holiday Activity Camps

If you’re looking for something that lasts longer than a day to keep the kids busy then a sports holiday camp with Aspire Sports could be the answer.

Taking place at Alderbrook School, they provide action-packed sessions throughout the holidays for children up to the age of 14. An Ofsted registered supplier, they even accept childcare vouchers to help with the costs. With a wide range of sports and activities, there is something for everyone and it’s guaranteed to keep the kids off their technology.

Getting Back To Nature

If you want to see the great outdoors, you don’t have to go far in the Solihull area.

Earlswood Lakes is just on the outskirts of Solihull and offers plenty of activities for the kids. The lakes are actually made up of three reservoirs and there is also a craft centre and an historic engine house to see too.

Free activities include wildlife spotting on a walk around the lakes including woodpeckers which have been seen in the area but you can also take part in some fishing and even go sailing on the lakes.

To find out more about Earlswood Lakes, how to get there and how it’s maintained by the Canal and River Trust, take a look here.
